Richard Baily was a painter who lived in Canton, Missouri, the small town where I grew up. Rich and I were boyhood friends. I marveled at his art skills. In my visits in recent years, we discussed the stories behind his paintings. Our discussions were so interesting that I decided to do an interview with him about storytelling from a painter’s perspective. He died several months after I did the interview. Some of his stories had very complex stories behind them. Others no story at all. Rich was fascinated by stories that others brought to his paintings. Photojournalists always try to tell a story with their pictures. Artists, at least from Baily’s perspective, sometimes try to tell a story and other times just paint.
