S-curve

Some pictures incorporate a “S” or curve in the composition. Some are subtle like the hose in this picture. Others are more pronounced such as a curvy road or winding river or stream. Sometimes this compositional technique is called Hogarth’s Curve or Line of Beauty after William Hogarth, and 18th century painter. According to Hogarth, the s-curve attracts attention.

Usually,the photograph should be made from a high angle to best see the curve.

Other interesting aspects of this picture are are cast shadows and the contrast between lights and darks (tan mound, green grass).
