Many people pictures fall into one of three categories: action, reaction or interaction.
Facial expressions are pan-cultural. That is, they are universally understood across cultures anywhere on Earth. Sport photographers know to turn the camera to the crowd after some momentous play. Emotion is always present at a sporting event. For every action there is a visual reaction. You have to be prepared to catch it because it is often fleeting.
