Wooseon Jung known as “Irene” was a staff member at Bert Adams Scout Reservation near Atlanta in the summer of 2012. Randy Piland and I were part of the teaching staff of the first national visual storytelling workshop. While our students were out finding a story and gathering natural sound, we decided to do a story too.

The unusual part of this story became the opening. Randy and I were at a dinner for scoutmasters when we heard Irene being introduced. We did not know she was to speak. Instinctively, I turned on my recorder and Randy focused his camera. We did not talk to each other; we just acted. It was entirely unplanned on our part but we were ready and our reward was a very energetic opening for the story.

My job was sound and Randy’s was pictures. I had a recorder with me at all times and Randy had his camera. You can never be without your equipment when you are on a story.
