This story was shot and audio recorded in about 30 minutes as a demonstration as part of a workshop. After entering the room, I talked with Randy Biggs. Scout Ben Hobson was already on the air with Jamboree On The Air (JOTA). I learned that the amateur radio station was in its first day of operation with new call letters in a new permanent location at Camp Belzer.

I suggest to my students that they write on paper or in their mind a single sentence to describe their story before they start shooting or recording. My sentence was, “Star Scout Ben Hobson makes the first contact on the first day of operation of WD9BSA during Jamboree On The Air.”

Thus, the focus of the story was Ben. I used a brief interview with Randy Biggs to provide context and quickly went to pictures and audio of Ben.

I only interviewed Randy though other adults were present. Randy had interacted with Ben and I had pictures of them together. There was no need to interview anyone other than Ben and Randy.

Nothing was set up. Both Ben and Randy were interrupted from what they were doing to do the brief interviews.

Audio was recorded with a hand-held Zoom H4n.
