Episcopal Service – Boy Scout National Jamboree

This project presented some challenges. My assignment was to make pictures for use by Jamboree Today, the daily newspaper for the Boy Scout National Jamboree. That means I had to have the identification for recognizable people in pictures. In this case, name, scout rank, troop number, scout council and hometown were required.  I also wanted to produce something for the Jamboree website. How do you get all this information and not disturb the worship service? I wrote a template  for the caption info in my caption notebook. For tight shots, I tried to photograph people that were easily accessible without stepping over others. After I made the picture, I quietly approached the subject and simply pointed to the information template and handed the subject a pen. That approached worked. Without uttering a word, I got the information I needed with minimal disruption.

Gathering audio was a challenge as well. The priests knew they were in an outside setting and needed to project their voices. That helped. I had one Sennheiser wireless mic and I put in on one of the priests. The wireless receiver was connected to a Zoom H4 digital recorder. The single wireless picked up all the sound. Obviously, it was a various levels, louder for the priest that wore it and quieter for everyone else. When the worshipers responded in unison, the level was naturally higher and that helped. I adjusted the levels accordingly in the sound editing software and had reasonable sound for the circumstances.
